Drywall is attached to the studs to make walls. When you are hanging pictures or attaching something to a wall, like a chair rail, it should be attached through the drywall to the stud or you need to use a special anchor on drywall. A stud finder can make finding the studs within the wall easier.
Studs for larger buildings may be made of metal.
