A residence or place where someone lives (resides) is not necessarily a home.

A primary residence has legal implications, like where and how much you pay in income or property taxes.

A residence can be permanent or temporary. It can be the place you collect your mail and sleep at night, or it can be much more.

The main differences between just a residence and a home is how it makes you feel. Do you feel safe, comfortable, like you have a right to be there?

Some residences house just an individual or single "immediate" family; others are designed to provide quarters for an extended family or multiple families (duplex, apartment).

The functions of a residence include a place

  • to sleep
  • to keep stuff
  • where people can reach the residents (by telephone, mail or visiting)
