The type of flooring in a home or room affects its look, its sound, how you clean it and more.

Types of flooring:

  • longevity
  • cost
  • appearance
  • cleaning

Some types of flooring will hold up better over time than others. Carpeting probably lasts the shortest amount of time. Linoleum, especially poorer quality, also lasts a shorter time than others. Wood floors can last over 100 years. Stone can last even longer.

Dirt floors are generally cheapest.

Tiles and linoleum can provide a wide variety of appearances. Stone can be used for mosaics. Wood can be rough, laid in straight lines or patterned in parquet. Carpet comes in a variety of patterns and colors.

Rugs and carpeting can hold dirt. Smoother surfaces are easier to sweep or mop clean.
