Bamboo is a fast growing woody plant. It's used for buildings, furniture and furnishings. Some bamboo is edible. Some is used as a decorative plant. It's strong and light-weight. It is used for many of the same purposes as wood: furniture, buildings, walls, flooring, cutting boards, screens and more.
Because it is fast growing, and replenishes quickly some people believe it's an ecologically good source of building materials. However, there maybe some issues with hardwood forests being cut down to grow bamboo and poor labor practices.
Recently, bamboo has also been used to make fabric as well as some of its more traditional uses.
