Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Not only is basil a wonderfully fragrant herb, but it also serves as a repellant to some pests that like tomatoes. Basil has a pungent, somewhat minty, peppery taste. There are many different varieties of basil.

Basil is in the mint family.

Basil makes an excellent pesto. It is an ingredient in many Italian dishes.

It has multiple vitamins. Basil has a high level of vitamin K with over 60% of the USDA estimated daily recommendation (RDA) in 2 teaspoons or 3 grams of dried basil. This amount of basil also has over 5% of the daily recommendation of iron, calcium and vitamin A, with significant amounts of other vitamins as well.[1] Two teaspoons of fresh basil will have about 27% of the RDA.[2]

Basil can be grown in an outdoor garden or a potted indoor garden. It does best with plenty of water and indirect sunshine. Keep the soil moist.

Herbage
